FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (20-18, 5-7 SSC) lost a pair of games Saturday at the AD Griffin Sports Complex to No. 6 Barry (28-5, 11-1 SSC). The Buccaneers took the opening game of the doubleheader by a score of 10-2 and then followed with a 4-0 victory to wrap up the three-game sweep of the Sharks.
Game One Recap
Barry posted five runs in the second and seventh inning on its way to an impressive 10-2 win. Jessica Tabor punctuated the victory for the Bucs with a grand slam in the top of the seventh.
After a scoreless first inning, Barry tallied five runs in the top half of the second inning to take control of the game early. Natalia Ojeda, who also scored two runs in the game, drove in three of the base runners in the inning with a double down the left field line.
NSU would recover one of the runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Katie Kelton (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) would cross the plate for the Sharks on an infield error by the Bucs’ shortstop.
Unfortunately, the Sharks were unable to add anymore runs and Barry bounced back with five more in the top of the seventh. With one run already plated for Barry, Tabor stood in and sent a 2-2 pitch over the centerfield wall to clear the bases with a grand slam, extending the Bucs lead to 10-1.
The Sharks would add one more run in the bottom of the seventh as
Lorena Spaulding’s (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) sacrifice bunt allowed
Melanie Spicola (Fr., Umatilla, Fla.) to score from third after her triple to centerfield.
Barry outhit NSU 11-6 in the game, with no Shark batter recording multiple hits.
Game Two Recap
Barry pitcher Brianna Smith registered her second shutout of the weekend, helping lead the Bucs past NSU 4-0. NSU pitcher Sara DeMuth was only off her game by a slight margin in comparison to Smith, giving up only six hits, striking out six others and allowing only two earned runs.
The Bucs notched their first run in the third inning on a sacrifice bunt from Sarah Broeseker. In the next inning, Broeseker added two more RBI to her total, singling to right field to drive in Kelly Martinez and Julie Brito. Barry’s final run crossed the plate in the fifth inning following a passed ball.
The Sharks threatened to score in the sixth and seventh inning, but were unable to get a base runner completely around the infield.
Jaimee Vega (Jr., Loxahatchee, Fla.) knocked a triple with one out in the sixth, but was unable to score. In the seventh,
Chelsea Emery (Jr., Eustis, Fla.) walked to start the inning and then DeMuth singled to put two runners aboard with one down. Smith though, would get the next two batters to pop and line out to end the game.
NSU will next be in action Tuesday when it hosts Palm Beach Atlantic for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. DeMuth will look to break the Sharks’ single-season record for strikeouts against the Sailfish. The senior has 212 this season, just five shy of tying Lexi Sarradet’s 2009 record of 217.
